  • Birding. Enthusiasm matched only by incompetence in identifying anything smaller than an ostrich.
  • Travel. Every opportunity taken to see new parts of the world, never forgetting that southern Africa can still match the very best elsewhere. Recent destinations include Egypt, Turkey and Iran.
  • Sport. Recently came to the reluctant conclusion that a career as a professional footballer is no longer on the cards. Having switched to golf instead, looks like a similar career outcome is likely.
  • Family. Wife Bev is an internationally-recognised expert in social research (www.socialsurveys.co.za); son Jonah is in Grade 9 at St.John's College in Johannesburg (learn more about this excellent school at www.stjohnscollege.co.za); stepson Oscar is studying for a postgraduate LLB at Rhodes University in Grahamstown and is doing what all such students do (we don't ask, you shouldn't either). Official version of events to be found at www.ru.ac.za. Brother Jo is a UK-based consultant, trainer and facilitator on cross-cultural business issues, advising clients from all corners of the world. More info from jo@riceassociates.co.uk. Other brother Tim is a slow left arm bowler who occasionally dabbles in matters lyrical and theatrical. Check out the full story at www.timrice.co.uk.
